The Spirit came upon the disciples with tongues of fire. I sometimes wish we experienced the same thing when we come to Christ. Yet, looking back over my life I can see the times when He was present, helping me through difficulties or to make sound decisions.
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another [a]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:16-18 NKJV)
I believe we have to experience how the Spirit works in our life before we can truly see Him in hindsight. God is often subtle in how He works in our lives. The same can be said with how the Spirit comes upon us and how He works in our lives.
While scripture is clear regarding the Spirit’s role in our lives, I believe it may be harder for new Christians to understand and feel just how close He is. I think this is why scripture depicts God as Father, Christ as savior and friend, and the Spirit as helper. Each is unique and has a role in the believers life. We must foster these relationships in exactly that way. Knowing that the Helper is always there, living inside and helping us make good choices when we allow. God stills allows us free will, but the Helper is there to guide when we allow.
Reflect on: The role of the Helper in your life. Is He as relevant in your life as He should be?
