Listen to the Spirit Within

19 [a]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:19-20 NKJV)

Luckily, I have never been one to get angry easy and when I do get mad the feeling dissipates quickly. In general I have been able to keep my emotions in check for the most part. I have also become a much better listener over the years, not jumping in to create a fix where one may not be needed.

Listening is a skill that must be fostered. In doing so we also gain a much needed brake on our emotions. By spending more time listening we can formulate well devised questions that can help diffuse situations. When we also use some of that listening silence to pray for guidance from the Spirit within, He can provide insights we may not be considering. The Spirit gives those who will listen discernment. In many cases people are not necessarily trying to push our buttons, they are simply hurting and needing a listening ear.

Reflect on: Your listening abilities and the need to consult the Spirit when things get heated.
