10 I am the Lord your God,
Who brought you out of the land of Egypt;
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11 “But My people would not heed My voice,
And Israel would have none of Me.
12 So I gave them over to [a]their own stubborn heart,
To walk in their own counsels. (Psalm 81:10-12 NKJV)
Possibly one of the greatest dangers in trying to live a faith life is if we do not obey and begin to walk in our own counsel. The old saying regarding trying to be one’s own lawyer is taking a fool for a client pertains here. When we seek our own counsel we are talking a fool for counsel.
The Psalms tell us that when we do our hearts become stubborn and we no longer heed God’s voice. This is a situation we need to avoid at all cost. It too is why we need good godly people to surround us. When we do not have this wise counsel near we can tend toward listening only to ourselves. First we lose the voice of God, then we lose the voice of those who love God and we need near.
Trying to go this world on our own can be a truly daunting task to be sure. I can’t count the number of times I have woken in the night with only anxiety and fear as companions. In the dark hours of the night we can feel very alone. The same can be said for when we try to walk in our own counsel.
Reflect on: Just who you have around you to counsel you in the Way and if you are truly listening to God.
