16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Galatians 5:16-17 NKJV)
It can be easy to read this scripture and gloss over it as we may consider it only pointed toward those who struggle with sexual sin. However, “the lush of the flesh” goes well beyond our sexual desires. It is referring to everything that comes only from our human nature. Those things we “lust” after that are not from or of God.
So, we can actually shorten it to simply “of the flesh” and possibly understand the root of that which is ungodly.
The best way to help us understand where something is coming from is to check with the Spirit. Our Guide and Advocate can help us to better understand what comes from God and what comes from the flesh. Even though it is often very easily discerned by simply asking ourselves who it serves. If it only serves us, then it is most likely of the flesh.
Reflect on: Your understanding of what comes of the flesh and what of the Spirit. Ask for guidance in understanding.
