A Deeper Understanding

30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. (Acts 8:30-31 NKJV)

I often use commentaries to better understand scriptures. I greatly enjoy listening to sermons as well to gain greater insight into God’s Word. I hope that these devotions also provide others with a deeper understanding of aspects of scripture and provide some added curiosity to seek even more understanding.

Having someone to guide us makes the learning experience better in so many ways. Furthermore, the Spirit is there to provide insight through gentle nudges to seek a better understanding. As the Ethiopian official said to Philip, “How can I (understand), unless someone guides me?”

This too is where the believing body comes together to discuss the Word and together grow in our joint knowledge. We learn from one another and help each other grow.

Seek first the Kingdom of God and all this will be added to you.

Reflect on: who or what helps you understand scriptures? Do you need to seek out resources or others to help you gain a deeper understanding?
