A Different Reaction

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. (Matthew 5:38-42 NKJV)

We are called to do many things that may not necessarily be easy for our human nature. Little of the above will sit well with us if we are not careful to put God’s way before our own. Human nature drives us to respond in the exact opposite way that God’s Word points out.

We do not have to be totally passive, however. I believe that God gave us all a specific nature. Maybe yours is one to be reconciliatory in all of your dealings. Or maybe He gave you a strong will that seeks justice above all. What we must do is reconcile the nature God gave us with His word on how we are to react to others while we are on this earth.

Reflect on: The nature God gave you and the challenge His Word puts before you in how you react.
