A Little Birdie Told Me

20 Do not curse the king, even in your thought;
Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom;
For a bird of the air may carry your voice,
And a bird in flight may tell the matter. (Ecclesiastes 10:20 NKJV)

My mom used to say “a little birdie told me” whenever she knew something that I had done that I thought I kept secret. I never realized that this phrase had a scriptural basis until recently.

Today, we live in a society where we not only broadcast everything we think on social media, but we are also very vocal about everything political. I do my best to stay out of these debates, whether they be online or in person. We seem to have just lost any level of decency when it comes to this topic.

But, as Christians, we are told to not curse those in power. We do not have to agree with them, and we should not do anything that goes against our scriptural Christian values and mandates. However, we do need to be better about holding our tongue regarding these things. This is not to say that we should not have a voice. But that we should consider what we are saying and temper it with how Jesus would want us to respond.

Reflect on: What do your comments about those in power say about your faith walk?
