To Serve

13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (John 13:13-15 ESV)

Our roles in life tend to elevate us as we move up the corporate ladder, as we grow our family or simply as we get older. We learn more and more about life and we become wiser, hopefully. But we never outgrow the need to be humble and serve others. This is ingrained in our faith based DNA.

I have run service organizations my entire career. These have been critical roles, but they have never been prestigious. However, these roles have always been perfectly in line with how I interact with people. I have always sought to understands others needs and fill them if I could. Yes, this aligns with my faith, but it did not stem from there originally. In fact it came about more organically than that. It just seemed each time I took a role in life it was always in some form of service. Not that my role was any better than anyone else’s, just that it has always been in service to others and I like that.

When we give up ourselves we can often find a very natural place in life.

Reflect on: How service plays a part in your life.
