27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control,[a] lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:27 ESV)
So that we do not misinterpret this line of scripture, Paul is not talking about losing our salvation. What he is referring to is that if we are not self controlled our ministry to others may be lost or may be ineffective. Thus, disqualifying us from that service to others.
Now, you may say, “I am not a preacher, so this does not apply” but I would posit that every aspect of how we live the faith life and how we speak preaches to others. Thus, we too must discipline all aspects of our lives under the rule of Christ and be self-controlled. This control should lead us to live lives that speak of Christ influence over our actions leading others to question why and give us an opening to share the Good News.
You are a lamppost, a sign upon a hill.
Reflect on: What lengths you go to to discipline your body and how by doing so your actions point to Christ.
