Cultivate

3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[a]
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act. (Psalm 37:3-5 ESV)

In some translations the word “befriend” is replaced with “cultivate”. I think this word is more descriptive of what we must do. The faith life is much like tending a garden. We must cultivate a relationship with God and with others, both inside the faith community and outwardly to others.

Within our own lives we are tilling our fallow soil and planting new seeds of scripture. These must be watered with prayer and contemplation. We want a deep rich life with Jesus well sown into our lives.

With others we may be called on to plant new seeds of faith or to water a new or old faith. Even those we have know the longest need us to, through God, provide nutrients to their lives. Again, scripture and prayer are the answer, along with our God given compassion.

Reflect on: How you are cultivating the faith life in yourself and others.
