“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’” (Excerpts from Matthew 4:1-11 ESV)
Just before Jesus began His ministry He went alone into the wilderness to fast and pray for 40 days. After this the enemy came to Him to try to lead Jesus astray, much like he does us on a regular basis. Jesus gave a scriptural response to each of these temptations.
We can use this, and many other scriptures, to combat the wiles of the tempter. Additionally, we are not left alone in our temptation, the Spirit is within to guide us back to God’s path. We should also have good Christian friends who can help and be there as sounding boards and accountability partners.
Reflect on: God gives us many resources to stay away from temptation, but do we afford ourselves of them?
