Hospitality to Strangers

1 Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Hebrews 13:1-2 ESV)

Life can take us down many different paths and connect us with a multitude of friends and acquaintances. We should seek to interact with brotherly love in every case, as we may not realize when we have entertained angels.

I have a story from a relative about a time when someone came to his aid, and in effect saved his life in a very traumatic situation. When he tried to question others on the scene about the kindly, white haired gentleman who came to his aid, no one else had seen him nor remembered him.

Is this a case of angelic intervention? I do not know. However, we can never be sure of the nature of those we interact with. Would it not be best that we then interact with everyone with brotherly love?

Stories such as this can make others uncomfortable. We can be quick to write off an encounter like this as simple happenstance. But how much better to look at them as possible encounters with the divine! In doing so, we may find that our life it changed in some way and how we respond may begin to reflect the spirit of today’s scripture.
