Doorkeeper

10 For a day in your courts is better
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness. (Psalm 84:10 ESV)

I seem to always stumble across scriptures that really make me think. Well, it is not that I am stumbling across them, but that God is providing insight into His nature or what mine should be that the scripture speaks to. Today’s scripture is no exception.

We all want to think that God has some grand role for us to play in heaven. But in reality, being a simple doorkeeper there will be just as important role as any other. We put worldly values on titles. In doing so we elevate people who may not necessarily deserve it and we denigrate people who surely do not deserve it.

My father taught me to treat all men (and women) equally. He used to say, “You are no better or no worse than anyone out there.” Such truth in this. But we like to strive for position so that we can gain the worldly elevation of title. It is all simple fallacy. We are truly no better or no worse than anyone out there, especially in God’s eyes. Our roles on earth will not elevate us in heaven. So we need to keep a doorkeepers heart and open it for the low and the high.
