1 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruits. (Proverbs 18:1 ESV)
If you have ever known anyone who battles anxiety or depression you may have had a front seat to seeing the power of words. It is very easy for an errant comment to really impact how the person feels about themselves or their situation.
How we speak to others not only has the potential to impact how they feel themselves, but has a lot to do with how they feel about us. People form impressions more from what comes out of our mouths than our appearance. Our words reveal a lot about who we are and as our scripture notes “we will eat its fruit.”
This scriptural context may be where the idea of eating our words originally came from. If we do not wan to “eat its fruit” then we must be careful about the words that come out of our mouth. Our desire should be to edify one another and not tear down. We need to be building one another up and be watchful that the fruit of The Spirit comes out in how we talk. Our words also speak volumes about our walk and just who is guiding our lives. If we do not edify Christ in what we say, how can others come to know Him!
