Unwilling to Wait

15 For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
“In returning[a] and rest you shall be saved;
    in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
But you were unwilling, 16 and you said,
“No! We will flee upon horses”;
    therefore you shall flee away;
and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”;
    therefore your pursuers shall be swift. (Isaiah 30:15-16 ESV)

Sometimes, God just wants us to stay where we are and rest in him, being quiet and trusting that He will be our saving grace. But we think we know best, we are unwilling to wait. We make plans and run off to make them happen leaving the safety of God’s embrace for what we think is best. We take our future in our own hands.

Doing this outside of God’s plans and God’s guidance is often a recipe for disaster. We can even find when things go well in the short run we are in a less than desirable place years down the line. We realize that our plans may have had positive short term result but because we did not wait on God we are ultimately worse off. The negative situation or circumstance may also ultimately catch up with us.

While it may not be easy at the moment it is always best to wait on God. Waiting on God not only allows life to open up as God desires but it gives us time to listen and accept God’s path. It gives us time to reflect on what caused our current situation and find ways to improve ourselves. In this way we are being obedient to God and letting Him teach us about His sovereignty, strengthening our faith.
