Delayed Understanding

Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.” (John 13:5-7 ESV)

Do you believe God is doing a work in your life?

Jesus was continually teaching the disciples. His every action was showing them how He expected them to act once He was gone. However, they were very slow to learn, much like us. We may learn our lessons slowly, but like the disciples we have a loving Master who waits patiently until we begin to understand.

Often too, we my not realize exactly what work God is doing in our lives. So we kick against the goad, complaining and impatient to understand just what God is doing. We are unruly children, but luckily He treats us that way. Instead of giving us the punishment we deserve as mature adults, He deals with us like a loving father with immature children.

“What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.”
