Confidence and Assurance

1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 ESV)

Confidence and assurance are the two things most of us look for in this life. We desire a life where we can rely with confidence upon the assurance that everything is going to work out for the best. But what about when it doesn’t? Are we quickly crushed? Do we lose our hope and begin to lament to God, asking “why us”?

There is much in this life which is unseen. In fact, if we are realistic, we have no idea what might happen today or tomorrow. We can only see what happened yesterday. We truly have a very limited vision regarding our lives and how things will work out. Our entire faith is based mostly upon the unseen. This is why our confidence and assurance must rest in Jesus.

Additionally, at times life can begin to feel hollow and empty. We may feel like we are simply going through our days putting one foot in front of the other. This often happens when we start to lose focus upon a strong purpose in life. We begin to go through each day just doing what is put in front of us with no real idea of any higher purpose. This can sap any amount of confidence we might have.

It is at times like these that we must then focus more intently upon the assurance Christ provides. Knowing that, no matter what, we have the assurance of our faith so that we do not lose hope.
