The Body is a Temple

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV)

There is so much today that causes us to look at ourselves, especially our bodies, and feel some sense of shame or unhappiness. But this is not how God expects us to look at our bodies. We are told that our body is a temple that we are to glorify God through it. This is not some command to become beautiful. God is talking about the inner person more than the outer.

Look, staying in shape is not a bad thing. It helps us to remain healthy as we grow older. And yes, it provides some sense of pride in how we look or the state of our fitness. However, for many, it can become an obsession or a place where we sin in other ways. God does want us to take care of ourselves, but not to the exclusion of our spiritual state.

When we work more upon the inner spiritual person, we are truly following today’s scripture. This becomes our spiritual exercises that builds upon spiritual strength and our ability to apply scriptural principles. We are building a strong inner temple where we can reside when the world is crumbling around us. Our inner bodies can stand against the storms of life.

Lastly, regarding our bodies, remember you are not your own. You were bought for a price. What we are doing to, putting in and doing with our bodies should be of concern. We should not overlook the otter person to be sure. God wants us to be good stewards of all He has given us.
