23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23 ESV)
To hold fast is to continue to believe in or adhere to an idea or principle, as Dictionary.com says. Another definition I found online says – A metaphor seen in many verses of the Bible is the term hold fast or holding fast, meaning “be diligent,” “cling to,” or “take a firm grasp of.” It is based on the idea of gripping tightly to an object. Interestingly a castle was also sometimes referred to as a holdfast.
Pretty much in every definition we see that whether we are being told to “hold fast” or considering the safety of a “holdfast”, it is meant to be protection. The kind of protection we find in coming to Christ and relying upon His promises. We are holding fast to the one who saved us and there can be much comfort in this. More than in thinking that a castle of any sort will protect us.
In fact our scripture goes on to tell us what we are holding fast to; the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. We need to be ready to confess that hope as well so that others know what we hold fast to and why.
So no matter what may assail us today, know that you can hold fast to Christ promises.
