Lifter of my Head

3 But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head. (Psalm 3:3 ESV)

Have you ever been so tired that it was hard to lift your head, or simply to hold it up? Granted, our heads are heavy bits perched on our much smaller necks. It is the one thing a new baby struggles with the most for a time. But when we are beyond weary and maybe when our burdens are heavy, we just want to lay our head down and rest.

I like how the English Standard Version of the Bible puts this. “But you, O Lord,…the lifter of my head.” I have written often about God as our shield and the glory that God bestows upon us. But when we are weary to the bone there is nothing more needed than one who helps us lift our head, one who gives us strength.

To do so also implies that He helps us move forward and does not leave us in this weary state. He comes to our aid and lifts our head so that we may take yet another step in this life. I know there may have been times, or maybe are now, where it just does not feel like you can go on….but you can. God is there to lift your head and help you keep moving forward. He is there to prepare a way.

God is the lifter of my head, an ever-present shield around me and the glory of my being.
