13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. (Matthew 13:13 ESV)
There are those who simply do not understand scripture. Part of this is due to how Christ spoke in parables and part of it is that until one comes to faith understanding of the Bible is not available to them. Without the understanding of God’s saving grace and mercy which leads to faith, the Bible is just a collection of stories.
How sad to look at the wealth of scripture so superficially.
“The Bible is the most valuable thing that this world affords. In it lies wisdom, the Royal Law, and the lively Oracles of God.” This is a paraphrase of what the Moderator of the Church of Scotland said as he handed a Bible to Britain’s new monarch during a coronation service. What an interesting and spot on summation of what scripture affords us. It is not some long dead text but the living Word.
I firmly believe that all of the answers we need lie within scripture, we must simply be open to its message. Furthermore, while God does not change, I believe His Word changes for each of us depending upon where we are in life. It provides answers to life’s questions but must be mined over and over again to squeeze every drop of wisdom in each new season of our lives.
The parables may, at times, be hard to understand, but how much greater the message when we do understand.
