Overwhelmed

23 A person’s steps are established by the Lord,
and he takes pleasure in his way.
24 Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed,
because the Lord supports him with his hand. (Psalm 37:23-24 CSB)

We are not going to walk through this life without stumbling and falling. But we do not have to be overwhelmed when we do either.

I wish I could help every believer out there see this. I wish I could make every nonbeliever realize what they could have with God. But I cannot. Many will see and hear and still fall away. But God does not want anyone to lose hope and feel alone.

I think the hardest part of our scripture today is the statement “he will not be overwhelmed.” I think this is hard because so many feel overwhelmed today. Whether it is with our responsibilities or with simply where we currently are in life, feelings of being overwhelmed creep in. We forget God is in our corner and we can feel abandoned. But we are not. We will never be abandoned by God.

If we add to this feeling of being overwhelmed the many mental issues that plague society today things just get worse. And I know, telling you that things can be better with God when you are overwhelmed with depression or anxiety is just so many words. The reality is that we must let the love of God, His Word and His Spirit sink deeply into our lives. But we tend to keep Him at arm’s length. We do not embrace His love or His grace and mercy in an engulfing way.

If we continue to run our lives with God sitting outside, not letting Him fully in to deeply engage, then the world will seek to overwhelm us. That is the enemy’s plan to keep us feeling this way. We must allow Him fully and deeply into our lives, releasing all of our anxieties and that which overwhelms us into His arms.
