Better Online Filters

35 Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn’t overtake you. The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going. (John 12:35 CSB)

Do you ever feel that the darkness of the world is catching up and ready to overtake you?

That is a bleak thought, right? But if we spend any time watching the news it can certainly feel that way.

Isn’t it odd how our social media feeds all seem to be so upbeat and the news so dire. It is as if we are living in completely different worlds, and in fact more and more maybe we are.

I was listening to a podcast the other week about how we are living our lives more and more in the metaverse. We can now conduct almost 100% of our lives online. This has especially been true since COVID pushed many into a permanent work-from-home state. We truly can live in an electronic cocoon now. And that is not good. I think it is a further darkness parading as the light from a screen.

Yes, we can cast a light even in this electronic world, and we need to. But, too, we need to spend time together because too much can be hidden in this new darkness. Online we can be too autonomous. Online the darkness more easily comes in the guise of light.

Because of this ever-increasing online presence we hear constantly about cybersecurity and the need for better security filters. But for believers, there is one filter for the online world that needs to be firmly in place and that is the filter of scripture.

So, can you pass everything you do online through this filter? This is the true security barrier between the light and the darkness.
