Don’t Diminish the Moment

19 “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures[a] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. (Matthew 6:19-20 CSB)

I believe one of the greatest sources of anxiety today is over what we have or what we fear we may not have for the future.

I make a distinction here because if we have things we are happy with, or proud of (our homes, our possessions, our position) then we can easily find ourselves worried about keeping them. Then there is concern over having enough to make it tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, to retirement…..and on and on.

Let me give you a sobering fact. You have this moment. This one…riiiiight…..NOW! That’s it, until the next moment.

We can plan for tomorrow, but we have no idea if tomorrow will come. This does not mean we should not plan, but it does mean we should not worry about our plans. Tomorrow is God’s territory. In fact every moment is God’s territory. We just want control over it because we truly have no real idea what tomorrow will bring.

So, with our reality being firmly grounded in each moment should we not be living the best we can in that moment! Again, prudent planning is valuable, but beyond that worrying about it all can do nothing but diminish the moment we are living in right now.

Don’t diminish the moment.
