24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:24 CSB)
We use the idea of building a house upon a solid foundation as a metaphor for how we build our spiritual life. Which is very apt in that we need Christ as that foundation. He is our cornerstone and every word of scripture lays a strong foundation upon which we are to construct the remaining rooms of our spiritual house. This strong foundation must be there so that as we build each room in which we will reside upon this earth.
Think about how we tend to compartmentalize our lives. There are rooms for relationships, for work, for hobbies, for health, for our mental well being, and others. Each of these rooms are then walled in with various scriptures that help us cope with exactly how we fill that room.
The hallways between these rooms allow us to transition one to another but may be difficult passages. The journey from one room to the next may be cluttered with many obstacles that keep them apart or cause them to be difficult transitions. Maybe you have had relationship issues, so building a hall between your care for your mental health room and a new relationship is a very tight passage. Maybe health concerns have caused you to need to construct a new room for your care but the hallway to that room may be fraught with painful poking and prodding.
But as long as we build our foundation upon Christ and construct each hallway and room with His scriptural promises we can be assured that he is there through it all.
