Paper Idols

4 Wealth is not profitable on a day of wrath,
but righteousness rescues from death. (Proverbs 11:4 CSB)

This scripture has been proven time and again both through the dealth of wealthy people and from turmoil in many countries. When death comes, or when a day of judgement comes (even if it is not divine), what we have in the bank means nothing. It is just so much paper.

This is where the wealth of wisdom and Godly favor through living a life of faith shine. These are two things that will not let us down. Yes, even these pass away in death. However, the legacy we leave is woven in our wisdom and faith as is our hope in what lies beyond.

When wealth drives and sustains us beyond our basic needs we become dependent upon its ability to manipulate the world around us. This dependence becomes a form of idolatry and we begin to worship at the feet of paper idols. However, all to often we become puppets to wealth’s grasp and enough is never enough. We hoard and do not help our fellow man.

But when we rely more upon wisdom and faith, wealth becomes a means to an end. It furthers God’s kingdom and supports mankind. If only the truly wealthy could step away from their paper idols and see this.
