Selfish Isolation

18 One who isolates himself pursues selfish desires;
he rebels against all sound wisdom. (Proverbs 18:1 CSB)

I tend to be a fairly solitary person and I am apt toward isolation. I can relate very well with today’s scripture.

Isolation makes us selfish. Because we are the only one around we can focus fully upon ourselves and our desires. We do not have to take others into consideration as we plan our day.

But God did not mean for us to isolate ourselves. The body of Christ, which is the church, is made up of many members. Each has its use, just as each of us have our use within the body. But we are not meant to act alone. We are meant to come together and edify each other.

In isolation this week I had made some decisions that were fully selfish. Once I was with my brothers this weekend I saw this and made changes that are more in line with the body.

We cannot always see the full breadth of a situation only through our eyes. We need others to fully understand.
