12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 CSB)
The visual scripture is trying to convey is not as common but just as relevant in our current world. When this was written the sword was the soldiers weapon of choice. Each warrior throughout the ages wielded it differently. As technology progressed so did our weapons. They went from crude things of random destruction to fine things that each was built for a purpose. Each was wielded differently and served a specific type of battle.
The Word is living, effective and sharper than any weapon. It seeks to seperate our innermost being from our sinful outermost being. It seeks to effectively seperate us from our sinful self.
It too serves as a defensive weapon against the slings and arrows of the enemy. Without the Word we are both defensively and offensively unable to meet the enemy’s daily challenges and our base sinful self.
With the Word in hand, in our heads and in our hearts we have all we need along with the Spirit within.
