Proper Speech

5 Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person. (Colossians 4:5-6 CSB)

What is it to have our speech gracious and seasoned with salt?

I have not always done well on this front. I can have a rapier’s wit and that means that I miss on the gracious front. Making sure that my speech is “seasoned with salt” would mean that I am speaking from scriptural wisdom. Here too I do not always succeed.

But I am human, and the work is in the trying. God knows I am not perfect and accepts me anyhow as I strive to do better and better.

When we do try to make a habit of speaking with graciousness and seasoning then we are putting Christ forth in our interactions. In this I strive daily.
