Pierced With Many Griefs

10 For the love of money is a root[a] of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:10 CSB)

This is a well worn scripture about the love of money….

…or is it?

Yes, of course it is about where we focus our attention (and money can be a real attention grabber) is where we will focus our time and purpose. However, it is the latter part of the verse that really grabs me.

Essentially it tells us that when our focus elsewhere we wander away from the faith. We keep our attention somewhere other than where we should, on Christ alone.

But, you say, how can I do well if my focus is always on Christ? My work takes so much of my focus and my time. Sure, and it always will. But this goes back to why we work. Do we work for money or for Christ. If we are only working for money then we are missing the mark. We are working with our focus in the wrong place and piercing ourselves with many griefs.

I have felt this acutely of late.
