Circumspectly

15 See then that you walk [a]circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:15-17 NKJV)

You do not hear the word, circumspectly, used often or maybe at all. Even in the extensive reading I do it rarely comes up. However, it fits so perfectly in our scripture today where we are given counsel on our walk.

The internet actually provides a good definition of the word if you are unfamiliar; Circumspectly means acting in a cautious, prudent, and discreet manner, carefully considering all potential consequences and risks before speaking or acting. It implies a watchful, vigilant approach to avoid mistakes, dangers, or unfavorable outcomes.

I like the last line of that definition. We must remain watchful and vigilant in our daily walk if we are to avoid mistakes, dangers or unfavorable outcomes. We intrinsically know this but do we follow this sage wisdom? Far too often our human nature prevails and we fall back into old habits. We must start each day by putting on the new man and crucifying the old.

Reflect on: Could your walk be spoken of as being fulfilled circumspectly?
