I grew up in a place and a time where a man’s word was his bond. My father also instilled a deep seated belief that a man was true to his word and stood by it. Thus, being a man of my word has always been very important to me and I get very disappointed in others who do not hold to this
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. (Matthew 5:34-35 NKJV)
There is one aspect of being true to my word that I do draw up short on and that is swearing it on anyone or anything. Yes, as we see in our scripture is Biblical, but if you are true to your word swearing to it holds less weight. People get to know me and know that I will simply do what I say I will do. As such I am careful what I give my word about.
These simple aspects make living and dealing with others better in their adherence. They both show and build a character that is steadfast and true. Many things like this came from a simpler time when personal interaction was at a high. Now, so much of our interaction is electronic it is far easier to simply forget or ignore the importance of simply being true to one’s word.
Reflect on: Those simple things that you do that show and build your character.
