Circumstances

The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. (Genesis 39:2-4 ESV)

It is easy to look very critically upon our lives and not really realize the blessings God is bestowing upon us. When we read through this short excerpt on Joseph’s life, it seems that God’s blessing is very evident in his life. However, we may be quick to miss or dismiss that Joseph was a slave at this point in his life.

Regardless of how “successful” in life we are, would we correlate being a slave to being successful? The answer is, probably not. However, God had other plans for this slave and even though Joseph’s life had been difficult he praised God and God honored him.

We can allow our circumstances dictate our attitude or we can allow God’s indwelling Spirit to do so. Life is a long string of circumstances that we try to mold into the life we live. We often think that we are in control of our destiny, but in truth it is God who directs our path.

Reflect on: How you praise God for the “circumstances” that have lead you to this point in your life. Consider His hand in all you have and consider that even in lowly circumstances you may be great in His eyes.
