Psalm 73 – Brutish & Ignorant

21 When my soul was embittered,
    when I was pricked in heart,
22 I was brutish and ignorant;
    I was like a beast toward you. (Psalm 73:21-22 ESV)

When we really think about and begin to discern God’s true nature we realize that it is we who have become brutish and ignorant. Yes, our soul may get embittered and our hearts pricked when we see the success of the wicked. But we must look at ourselves as well and really put everything into perspective, and preferably into God’s perspective.

Let’s face it, the human condition is petty, envious and prideful. We are so susceptible to all forms of malice. We are spiteful to God and to others. We think of only ourselves quite often and can easily fall into the trap of feeling like God is no longer on our side.

It is during these times that we must work to suppress that brutish and ignorant human nature. We must fall upon or knees before God and ask for His grace and mercy.

Reflect on: Your more basal nature and how it might have embittered you toward God.
