25 It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,”
and to reflect only after making vows. (Proverbs 20:25 ESV)
We should be careful with making promises, yes when it comes to others but more so when it comes to God. To make a vow to Him has more gravitas, thus, we should not enter into a vow to Him lightly. Even promising God to not to not do something or to do something should not be taking lightly. We can entangle ourselves in a level of obedience that we cannot keep. Of course, if we can then so be it, but humans are weak creatures.
It is better to speak to God in relation to His will. If it is His will or in His will we will or will not do a thing. Always harken back to God being the strength and not us. Within our own strength we often fail. For this scripture says, “when I am weak, He is strong.”
Reflect on: Any vow you make to God and doing so not in your own strength, but in His.
