1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 ESV) 7 For we live by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV)
Our senses, especially sight, are key to our understanding and relationship to the world around us. I almost lost all sight in my left eye some years back, and to this day my right eye does most of the work. It has made me very diligent about keeping up with anything relating to my eyes. Not that I was negligent before, but having limited vision makes you want to do everything you can to keep what remains.
Shouldn’t it be so with how we live by faith?
We have no vision into what will happen tomorrow. If I were to lose my sight completely, I would find myself stumbling through life, literally. Yet, we tend to do so quite readily when it comes to faith. We expect to know where God is taking us and when this is unclear our faith wavers and we find ourselves stumbling along.
But we are not living out our faith by sight. We are living out our faith by trust. This can be very hard in times of uncertainty. But God is forever there to lead us through what we have no sight to navigate on our own. In these times we may have to live completely by faith.
To live by faith it to step out when we cannot see where we are going, trusting fully in God.
