24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he (Jesus) was asleep. (Matthew 8:24 ESV)
When I was young it was said that I could sleep through a storm. I remember thinking the same of my son when he was young. I think the state of our mind early in life is such that we may not think anything can touch us. As the old sayin goes, we are “ten feet tall and bullet proof.”
Over time life chips away at that confidence and we begin to recognize our weaknesses and our fears become more real. I think this becomes especially true when one has children and we realize we can only protect them from so much. There are limitations we must learn to live with and this is where faith plays a bigger part in our lives.
Some may call faith a crutch however, something that we use to fall back on but has no real ability to support us. Well, from someone who can openly say I have had to lean on that crutch in life it has always supported me. When I knew I was at the limit of my human abilities, faith proved stronger than my human limitations. Faith should be bigger than us, and should be given to a God who is there for us in every situation and bigger than any obstacle.
Jesus slept during the storm because His faith in His Father was profound. Ours should be as well.
