23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:23 ESV)
Some months back I had to go to a cardiologist due to some blood pressure problems. Luckily, it was just my unhealthy eating and sedate lifestyle that was causing my problem, and a bit of genetics. However, it made me take notice, make changes in my nutrition and get out on my mountain bike more. It all made me more focused on keeping my heart with a vigilance.
My example was from a physical health standpoint. However, we need to do the same from a spiritual standpoint. In fact, there is little from a physical viewpoint that does not have a spiritual counterpart. From how we guard our vision, to where we walk, how we think, what we hear, our emotions and, yes, our heart. All should be guarded with all vigilance.
When we do not, just like with our bodies, we begin to be unhealthy. God is very concerned with our spiritual health. So much so that many scriptures speak about the fact that the body and this world is all fading away. However, our spirit has an eternal state that will come into play. Thus, what we are allowing in from a spiritual standpoint can have an eternal consequence. We must guard this with all vigilance.
