13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13 CSB)
There are not a lot of assurances in life. In fact we have a saying for this, “Nothing in life is sure but death and taxes.” That is a pretty fatalistic statement, but I have made it before as maybe you have too.
But for the believer there is something I would say that is more sure than death and taxes: eternal life. In fact, I would be so bold as to say it is the only surety in the believers life.
I have known people who did not pay taxes. I have read in the Bible about people who were taken to heaven and did not die. So even these two things are not 100% sure, universally.
What we can be sure of is that God’s promises will not fail us. We can, if we believe, stake 100% of our trust in God staying true to His word. Death and taxes will pass away and when we are in heaven these things that tax us (pun intended) in this life will fade away and be no more.
Christ did not come to necessarily make life here on earth easy. No, He came to give us life abundant and the surety of eternity. An abundant life may not necessarily be a life free from adversity. Abundance says we get a life that is full and has many up’s and down’s. Life is never flat, nor would we really want it that way.
So while we may be taxed by many things we can rest on the surety of God’s promise, His mercy and His grace.
