The Person Within

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees,[a] for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 CSB)

My father used to have a saying, “You can’t fool dogs or children.” Dogs sense how people truly are and children have no guile and their innocence senses the person within. But the world is a place of mask and hidden agendas. Luckily, the Lord see’s what is on the inside. Or maybe this makes you fearful….

We cannot hide our true selves from God. No matter what facade you might put on, God knows the heart. He is aware of our every thought and action. Many may think that He is too distant to care about us on this level. This is not true. God cares deeply and looks deeply into our very bones. God sees the person on the inside.

Thus, when we look at others and compare ourselves we are often comparing the facade we see to the inner life we lead. We know all of our own blemishes, but others cover theirs in ways we cannot see. We should not compare ourselves, but we should focus upon how God sees the person within. We too should know that God does not make junk. No, he makes each of us special and prepares us for our own journey which can, and does, look very different from others.

Humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.
