Commands

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commands. (John 14:15 CSB)

Our scripture today is brief and very to the point. There is no extraneous commentary, no parable, only a simple statement. If we love Christ we will keep His commands.

Seems simple enough, but then we walk away from our morning reading and go about our day. We give little or no additional thought to the matter. But loving God is about remembering Him throughout our day. It is not a momentary statement we make then go about our business.

God’s love for us is constant and complete. He does not go about His day and not give us another thought. No, He is continually in our lives showing us love through many acts that we do not recognize because we are too busy living.

And often we are too busy living life outside of His commands and His greatest command is for us to love. Can we say we follow this most central of His commands alone if we are angry in traffic, angry at our spouse or kids, frustrated with our business, giving in to our personal desires over God’s desires? I am sure you can think of many other examples that are consistent in your lives.

The greatest commandment is this, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
