The Comparison Game

But as for me, my feet almost slipped;
my steps nearly went astray.
For I envied the arrogant;
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

They have an easy time until they die,[a]
and their bodies are well fed.[b]
They are not in trouble like others;
they are not afflicted like most people. (Psalms 73:2-5 CSB)

Have you ever looked at how someone else lived and envied?

I suspect we all have at some point. Especially in this age of social media, we look upon the wonderful things people post and wish our lives were … different, better.

Furthermore, it can seem like those who do not love and serve the Lord have an easy time in this life. They very well may. They are living to the world’s standards, to man’s standards and we all know the enemy holds sway in this world. Our standard pits us against the world.

However, so much of what we see is what others want us to see. What lies beneath the surface is often a much different story.

For the Christian what lies beneath the surface may be a very different story also. However, beneath the surface lies something far greater. Yes, we too may hide behind a thin facade but beneath that is The Spirit who intercedes for us.

We must not allow ourselves to play the comparison game. We must remember that the sun shines and the rain falls upon the good and the wicked. We do not have a lock upon either good times or bad.

Watch the sun rise or set this day and know it does so for everyone on the planet. The difference is that when it sets upon our lives for the last time we have an eternal home where there is no comparison and the Son always shines.
