56 But all this has happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and ran away. (Matthew 26:56 CSB)
Have you ever felt deserted?
I know there have been times in my life when I felt I had been. Looking back I can see that I had not been, but at the time the feeling was very real.
Jesus was truly deserted by his disciples. To a man they all ran when he was arrested. Even though He had been very clear about what was going to happen, at the moment, they all fled.
Some times people leave us out of fear, some times out of jealousy, and other times out of a lack of concern. The reasons vary as much as the circumstances we are in at the time. Regardless, we are left with a feeling of emptiness.
The one person who never deserts us is God. He may feel distant but He never leaves. Too often that distance is brought on by our actions. We need to reconcile with God and change us, not wish for Him to change. God does not change, He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, and we should be very happy about this.
So even when we feel deserted we can turn to God and know that the Spirit is listening to the very groaning of our heart.
