43 “When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest but doesn’t find any.44 Then it says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’ Returning, it finds the house vacant, swept, and put in order.45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first. That’s how it will also be with this evil generation.” (Matthew 12:43-45 CSB)
We may rarely think about our souls as space, yet if we are being faithful we should continually be filling it with scripture.
That space wants to be filled as well and when we do not do so sufficiently we end up with a God shaped hole.
For the unsaved, that space seeks to be filled with things of this world to try to fill their God shaped hole. And while everyone is not possessed of demons there are many forms of unclean spirits that seek to fill the empty space.
We see this even with the saved and Godly in the form of all that seeks to fill our empty space. Busyness, addictions, self-centeredness, and every form of personal idol.
I say idols because that is what they become. They are the other things that we worship at the feet of and command large segments of our day. I know, as hard as it may be, each of us can name one of these idols.
Consider today what you might be fighting to filling your empty space and how we can make sure that only God is there.
