4 Therefore, since Christ suffered[a] in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding[b]—because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin[c]— 2 in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will. (1 Peter 4:1-2 CSB)
We often look at suffering as simply a state we go through. However, suffering is meant to be a learning experience for us. We are to use it to separate us from human desires and focus fully upon Spiritual desires.
Thus the role of suffering is to be a tool for our Spiritual improvement. If we are going through suffering and our faith and Spiritual state is not improving we are still living in too much in the flesh.
