6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person. (Colossians 4:6 CSB)
The salt seasoning here is synonymous with spiritual and scriptural wisdom.
I think too often though my seasoning of choice is pepper!
I have what may be called a rapiers wit. Meaning, a sharp intellect, making points so deadly they are like a rapier sword in fencing duels (internet definition).
The intellect part may be a bit of a stretch for me, but the other part isn’t. I have tamed this some over the years but if I am not very careful it rears its ugly head at every chance. Thus, I now try to follow this scripture and ask myself (if I catch myself in time) if I can’t season the conversation with a little salt instead of pepper.
I am doing better, but the pepper shaker is far too handy!
