1 Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord
in the splendor of his holiness. (Psalm 29:1-2 CSB)
Ascribe is not a word commonly used today. It means to “attribute something to”.
Too often we want to ascribe things to ourselves that really have very little reason to be so. When we do not first give glory and honor to God for ALL that we have and ALL we are capable of, we more often believe that we are more than capable.
This is not only the way of the world but it is a vain conceit that humans hold regarding their capabilities. We quickly forget that we are nothing without God. Furthermore, without Christ there is no way to God, no way to ascribe enough goodness to ourselves to be more than dirty rags.
Thus, ascribe everything to God, so that you may humble yourselves before Him.
