A Deep Well

12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people.[a] 14 But the person without the Spirit[b] does not receive what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated[c] spiritually. (1 Corinthians 2:12-14 CSB)

This block of scripture provides insight into why some do not (can not) understand the Bible and see it as foolishness. Until we have accepted salvation and received the Spirit, much of what is written in the scriptures is hidden. Without the Spirit to interpret and to provide guidance it can seem like only a simple book of good teaching.

However, it is so much more. Once received the scriptures open up to us like a beautiful flower that blossoms in our hearts and minds.

As we grow and mature, the Spirit further reveals deeper and deeper meanings. Because of this each time we read scripture, even though we have read it many times before, the Spirit reveals new meaning. Typically consistent with what we are experiencing at that moment in our lives.

Thus, the scripture becomes a deep well of knowledge that goes on forever.
