The Thief

10 A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. (John 10:10 CSB)

It is easy in a seemingly simple and straightforward scripture like this to miss the underlying meaning. On the surface it paints the picture of our enemy (the thief) and God’s great grace.

However, the underlying message is about our sin (the thief) and God’s grace. Where our sin has been like a thief stealing our peace, killing our communion with God and destroying our lives in Christ. Christ came so that he might displace our sin and give us abundant life.

Much like a thief, sin stands in the dark corners of our lives and lures us into wrong thoughts and acts. We must continually shine the light of Christ into those dark corners so that our sin is uncovered and not allowed to steal the life of abundance meant for us.
