6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [a]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (Genesis 3:6 NKJV)
Original sin came into the world much like it does today. It began with something that was pleasing to the eye and desirable.
Yes, the enemy played a hand in our original corruption, but our human nature had its way as well. Most sin begins with desire for something we see or some aspect of our pride. Eve visualized (liked what she saw) it and then rationalized it (wanted to be wise, to be like God).
Our world is absolutely overrun today with things that are pleasing to the eye. Be it another person, nice clothes, jewelry, watches, a nicer car, a bigger house. There is always something better out there, and our pride leads us to rationalize these things because we think we deserve them.
It is only when we begin to see the world through God’s eyes and with God’s presence that we begin to overcome our human desires.
Reflect on: That thing that you think, or thought, you just had to have. Was it really worth what it cost?
